Steamed buns, also known as baozi or bao, are a traditional Chinese food that has become popular worldwide. They are a type of filled bun that is made by steaming dough. The buns have a fluffy and soft texture and are often filled with savory or sweet ingredients.
Ingredients
.3 cups all-purpose flour
.1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
.2 tablespoons sugar
.1/2 teaspoon salt
.1/2 cup warm water
.2 tablespoons vegetable oil
.Filling of your choice (e.g. Beef, chicken, vegetables)
Instructions
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
Gradually add the warm water while mixing until the dough comes together.
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
Punch down the dough and knead it for a few more minutes.
Roll out the dough into a long tube and cut it into equal-sized pieces (about 2-3 inches in diameter).
Roll each piece into a small ball and then flatten it into a round disk using a rolling pin.
Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each disk and then gather the edges of the dough around the filling, pinching them together to seal.
Place each bun on a small square of parchment paper.
Let the buns rise for another 15-20 minutes.
Meanwhile, bring a pot of water to a boil and place a steamer basket over the top.
Brush the steamer basket with oil to prevent the buns from sticking.
Place the buns in the steamer basket, leaving some space between each bun.
Steam the buns for 15-20 minutes until they are puffed up and cooked through.
Remove the buns from the steamer and serve hot.
Enjoy your delicious homemade steamed buns!
