Classic Chocolate Cake

 A classic chocolate cake is a rich and indulgent dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is typically made with a moist and fluffy chocolate cake base that is layered and frosted with decadent chocolate frosting


Ingredients

For the cake

2 cups of all-purpose flour
2 cups of granulated sugar
3/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of buttermilk
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1 cup of hot water

For the chocolate frosting

1 cup of unsalted butter, softened
3 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup of heavy cream
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
A pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix well until fully combined.
Slowly pour in the hot water while mixing. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before removing them and placing them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cakes are cooling, prepare the chocolate frosting. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt to the butter. Mix on low speed at first, then increase to high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
Once the cakes have cooled completely, place one cake layer onto a cake plate or serving platter. Spread a thick layer of chocolate frosting on top of the cake layer.
Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting. Spread another thick layer of chocolate frosting on top of the second cake layer.
If desired, decorate the cake with additional frosting or chocolate shavings.
